Abstract
Beaches are economically important natural coastal resources. They add beauty to the coast and provide habitats for many organisms as well as services to people. The focus of this paper was to investigate whether beach users were aware of the key factors that affect the quality of the Elmina beach. Specifically, the physical, social and economic profiles of the beach users were addressed. The study involved administering a structured questionnaire to 100 beach users through quota sampling; and reports on the predominant factors influencing the beach usage. Most of the beach users were concerned about crowd; a major factor that influences beach quality and the rate of attendance, followed by water cleanliness, their comfort and noise. Beach users indicated that crowded beaches render the beach unclean. Most respondents would rather visit other beaches than a low-quality Elmina beach. Coastal erosion also reduces the carrying capacity and aesthetic value of the beach. Therefore, adequate information on erosion, provision of social amenities, public education and enforcement of coastal bye-laws are proposed to make the Elmina beach an ideal destination. A proposed application of a fee to improve beach quality and management was supported by 74% of respondents. That beach users are willing to pay a fee per visit, is largely because of their high level of education, and not income.

Key words: Beach user profile; tourists; beach quality; coastal erosion; beach management
